"An estuary is a semi-enclosed coastal body of water which has a free connection with the open sea and within which sea water is measurably diluted with fresh water derived from land drainage" (Cameron and Pritchard, 1963). May be a named feature. An Estuary is defined by the NOAA's Coastal Aquatic Framework (CAF) or local information concerning the extent of the mixed zone of fresh and salt water.
